EXTENSION OF THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT ANNOUNCED BY MINISTER OF STATE TOM PARLON

The Minister of State at the Department of Finance, Mr Tom Parlon TD, today announced that the Freedom of Information Act has been extended to an additional 32 public bodies * see list attached.

"This represents the latest phase in a continuing programme of extending the FOI Act," the Minister said. In welcoming the latest extension the Minister added that "it underlines the Government's
commitment to ensuring greater accountability in the public sector".

The Minister of State said that plans for further extensions of the FOI Act are being made towards ensuring that FOI applies to all appropriate bodies no later than end-2005.
